The Lafayette Pickwick Club was started in 1889 by five little girls who thought it would be great fun to start a Pickwick Club, just like Jo and Laurie had done in Little Women, the popular book of the day by Louisa M. Alcott.

Just as was done 125 years ago, members of the club are each given the name of a character from Charles Dickens, Pickwick Papers. The president of the club is always Mr. Pickwick. Meetings are monthly for lunch on a selected Saturday, usually in members’ homes. Programs cover a wide range of topics that are of interest to today’s women. Every year, the membership gives generous contributions to two or three not-for profits in the Lafayette area.

Over the years, many Lafayette women have been members of Pickwick Club, some for over 50 years! Members think fondly of Pickwick as a fun and gracious women’s club with a rich history.
